It’s no secret that Hit The Scene love Reckless Love. So imagine our delight when a copy of their third album ‘Spirit’ dropped into our lap! Out on Spinefarm Records on September 2nd, the boys have outdone themselves this time. RL have always been a good-time band, more than capable of delivering a merry metal party track after track, but something is different about ‘Spirit’.
Opening track; first single ‘Night on Fire” has an infectious voodoo jungle vibe (not dissimilar to ‘Coconuts’ from 2011’s Animal Attraction. Like a serious ‘Coconuts’.) The video is just as enticing, a glow in dark fiesta, complete with face paint and impressive fire antics, accompanied by blistering guitar solos from Pepe Salohalme. ‘Bad Lovin’’s message; “don’t matter if you’re straight, don’t matter if you’re gay” fits in madly beautifully with the David Lee Roth swagger of chorus lyrics “give me bad lovin'”. As usual, RL turn to their “original sin” 80s classic sex references, but its done so well you can look past what some may view as crude or jokey lyrics.
“I Love Heavy Metal” also pays homage to the days gone by of glam metal with cheeky lyric “pour some sugar on me”.
Track no.4 ‘Favourite Flavour’ is an upbeat tempo-happy romp, sure to be a crowd fave. Lyric “every day you’re in my Twitter feed” probably wouldn’t be in the songs of their 80s predecessors,so is modern glam about social media?! Oh how pop culture references have changed…
Our favourite song on the album, ‘Edge of Our Dreams’ is an epic ballad, with specks of Guns ‘n’ Roses and euphoric rises. A heartfelt story through RL’s journey, and probably one of their best songs through the entire trilogy of releases.
‘Sex, Drugs & Reckless Love’ (best title ever by the way) is the archetypal summer song, followed later by ‘Runaway Love’, where Slash himself couldn’t have written a greater opening riff.
Album closer Die Hard (if you’re in the UK) is an inspiring message to us all to never give up; “I’ll stand up for freedom to be what I am, don’t care if no one understands”, but done in Reckless Love style; “I’ve taken a few beatings, I got my ass kicked”.
Reckless Love can do no wrong, 3 albums in they are only getting bigger in the UK and in their native country of Finland. ‘Spirit’ is sure to skyrocket them to new heights; watch out O2 arena. It’s a slightly more grown up affair, and rings true to their sound. The thing about these guys, while young, is that they know their shit, and they encompass all the fun and bravado of hair metal, while maintaining their dignity with polished tracks and real emotion instead of just a love for lust.
